CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Patriot League women's basketball coaches announced Thursday that they will wear commemorative lapel pins during the 2006-07 season to honor the memory of their colleague, former Army head coach Maggie Dixon, who passed away in April.
This year every member of the Patriot League's women's basketball coaching staffs will honor Dixon with a lapel pin, which displays her initials on a basketball.
All season long, the Black Knights will keep Dixon close to their hearts as they honor her by wearing a special “MD” patch on their uniforms. The initials “MD” will be placed inside a clover leaf which, Army players will wear on the left side of their jerseys.
Dixon was a member of the Black Knights basketball family for the 2005-06 campaign. She led the Army women's basketball squad to its first Patriot League Championship title and NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. The 2006 Patriot League “Coach of the Year” guided the Black Knights to a 20-11 overall record and 11-3 in Patriot League play.
Army will further honor her memory with the Maggie Dixon Classic being held at West Point’s Christl Arena on Sunday, Nov. 12, opening the 2006-07 slate for the Black Knights. The Maggie Dixon Classic is a four-team event featuring a men and women's basketball doubleheader. The Army women will play Ohio State at 3:30 p.m., after Pittsburgh's men's team, coached by Maggie's older brother, Jamie, takes on Western Michigan at 12 p.m. Both contests will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
In a special presentation prior to the Army-Ohio State game, the Patriot League Championship banner and a 2006 Patriot League Coach of the Year banner, celebrating Maggie’s honor, will also be raised to the rafters in Christl Arena.
The Army Athletic Association will also present the Dixon family with a Patriot League championship ring from last season.
