LUBBOCK, Texas -- Clint Moore has become the latest Army baseball player to earn national recognition when he was named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List recently by the College Baseball Foundation. It marks the fifth consecutive season that the Black Knights have been represented on the prestigious list.

The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team as chosen by Collegiate Baseball magazine along with teammate Kevin McKague last June, Moore became the third Army freshman to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors last spring.

The Black Knights’ starting shortstop batted .350 with 14 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 46 runs scored and 39 runs batted in while serving as Army’s leadoff hitter this spring.

The Greensboro, N.C. (Grimsley H.S.), ranked among Patriot League leaders in nine offensive categories, pacing conference freshmen in five areas. He also topped the Black Knights in at-bats (197), base hits (69), runs scored, total bases (105), walks (28), stolen bases (14) and multiple-hit games (22).

Moore became the first freshman in Army history to lead the team in any of the following categories: base hits, total bases, runs score and stolen bases. He also posted 12 multiple-RBI efforts and finished with a .533 slugging percentage and a .446 on-base mark. He established Academy freshman standards in base hits, at-bats, multiple-hit games, stolen bases and total bases, with his base hit figure ranking sixth on Army’s overall single-season list.

One of just two Black Knights to start all 50 contests last spring, Moore batted .448 with runners in scoring position and batted safely in 37 of 50 games. He drove in at least three runs on six occasions and scored at least two runs 12 times.

The Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach, Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District Six his senior year when he led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984, he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27. The Plano, Texas, native was married to the former Sandy Arnold and they had one daughter, Lindsay Ryan.

The selection committee for the Wallace Award is comprised of a national panel of preeminent coaches, sports information directors, former winners and beat media who most closely follow the sport. Screening Committee members will evaluate the candidates and will continue their review throughout the entire baseball season. The list will expand and contract during the regular season and additional Wallace Watch candidates may be added as the season progresses. Voting for the three finalists and the Wallace Award winner will be conducted by confidential balloting, with totals tabulated by the J.W. Anderson & Associates accounting firm in Lubbock, Texas.

The 2009 award banquet will be held on July 2 in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.
