HANOVER, N.H. Nationally ranked Dartmouth scored three short-handed goals and beat Army in overtime, 5-4, Sunday night in the second game of the Ledyard National Bank Hockey Classic in front of 4,228 fans at Thompson Arena.
Army scored three goals in the second period to force overtime against 20-ranked Dartmouth but the Big Green netted the game-winner 1:43 into the extra session.
The Black Knights, playing for the first time in 21 days, fell to 4-10-1 and will face Massachusetts in the consolation game, Monday at 4 p.m. Dartmouth improved to 7-4 and will play Bemidji State in the title game at 7 p.m.
In the opening game of the tournament, Bemidji State beat Massachusetts 4-2, scoring twice on the power play to move to 8-7-0 overall.
Army freshman Mike Hull had a goal and two assists for a career-best three points and sophomore Joey Ammon earned his first collegiate multiple-point game but Dartmouth, coming off a 10-day trip that included three exhibition games in Denmark and Sweden, sent the home fans home happy.
Freshman Kyle Maggard also had a multiple-point game for the first time in his career with a goal and assist while Eric Sefchik also scored. Owen Meyer was credited with an assist while goalie Jay Clark made 32 saves.
Army had to kill off a Dartmouth power play opportunity less than a minute into the game but scored the opening goal of the game midway through the first period. Hull knocked home the rebound of a Maggard shot, as he was skating away from the net, for a 1-0 advantage with 8:52 remaining in the period. It was Hull’s third career goal and Maggard’s second assist.
Dartmouth tied the game three minutes later when Andrew Owsiak converted a Doug Jones pass to knot the game at 1 with 6:45 left in the period.
The Big Green made it a 2-1 lead when Connor Shields knocked home a rebound in a scrum in front of the net with five minutes reaming in the first period.
Army went back in front with two goals 36 seconds apart early in the second period. Sefchik tied the game with his fourth goal of the season, burying a rebound off of a Meyer miss.
Thirty-six seconds later, Ammon netted his third goal of the season, taking a pass from Hull off of a faceoff for a 3-2 Army advantage. The assist marked Hull’s second multiple-point game of his career.
The lead was short-lived though as Kyle Reed scored his first goal of the season, short-handed, to tie the game at 3 with 12:47 left in the period.
Army again answered, going back on top 4-3 when Maggard banged home a great pass from Ammon. Dartmouth goalie Jody O’Neill never saw Maggard’s shot as the freshman netted his fifth goal of the season. Hull and Ammon were credited with the assists. The three points established a career high for Hull and Ammon, a sophomore, recorded a multiple-point game for the first time in his career.
Reed scored his second short-handed goal of the game to tie the game at 4 with 1:51 left in an action-packed second period. Reed intercepted a pass near the blue line and converted the breakaway.
Each team had at least one power play chance in the third period and despite a combined 20 shots on goal, neither team was able to score, forcing the five-minute overtime session.
Army had a power play opportunity 36 seconds into overtime when a Dartmouth player was whistled for charging but captain Rob Pritchard scored second goal of the season for the victory.
Game Notes: Former Army hockey coach Jack Riley was among the crowd. Jack, the father of Army head coach Brian Riley, is a 1942 graduate of Dartmouth and coached at Army for 36 years, after winning a national championship as a player at Dartmouth. He also coached the 1960 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team to a gold medal ... Major John Bryan is serving as the team’s Officer Representative ... Army forward Owen Meyer returned to the lineup after missing six games with an upper body injury. Meyer was at left wing and in the starting lineup with center Eric Sefchik and right wing Cody Omilusik as well as defensemen Zach McKelvie and Mark Tilch ... Army’s other overtime game this season with a 3-3 tie against Sacred Heart on Oct. 31 at Tate Rink ...
