WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men's tennis team raised its record to 4-5 with a 7-0 shutout win over visiting Monmouth University on Friday at West Point's Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The Black Knights improved to 12-0 all-time against the Hawks, and had a lightened workload on Friday as Monmouth fielded just five players and was forced to forfeit two matches.
Army freshman Gary Kushnirovich (8-0), the No. 9 ranked player in the Northeast Region, remains unbeaten in his first season after securing a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 first singles win. Donald Van Velzer, Chris Albornoz, John Lucero, and Tripp Johnson each won their singles matches in succession in straight sets to add to the Black Knights' tally.
In doubles play, Albornoz/Lucero earned their fourth straight tandem victory, with Rashad Shelton/Dan Shaffer earning an 8-2 win in their debut to give Army the doubles point.
Army will take on New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sunday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
