WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army senior lacrosse captain Andrew Maisano was named one of 20 candidates for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, announced Thursday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowes' Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Maisano is the owner of a 4.0 grade point average and ranks 19th academically in the USMA Class of 2010. A Systems Engineering major, he has received the Superintendent's Award for Excellence every semester at West Point, recognizing the top-five percent of cadets based on the combination of academic, military and physical GPAs. A three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection, Maisano has been named to the Dean's List every semester at West Point. A member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and Golden Key Honor Society, he is also a member of the Society of American Military Engineers
Maisano sits on the Brigade Chain of Command, serving as the chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is also a company tutor, working with underclass cadets on their studies. Last summer, he interned at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems in San Diego, Calif., assisting the program managers and engineers, before returning to West Point to help teach combatives at the USMA Prep School during the summer training period.
A volunteer at the Saint Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen when he is home in his native Buffalo, N.Y., he has also volunteered at the USA Lacrosse Clinic in the fall as well as the Army Youth Lacrosse clinic during the winter for the past two years. As part of his senior studies, Maisano is currently working on a research and design project for the FAA to develop a commercial wind turbine that is an alternative energy resource while minimizing radar interference.
Slated to be one of the Black Knights' starting midfielders for the second-straight season entering 2010, he was listed in the starting lineup for all 16 games of the 2009 campaign and finished sixth on the team with 13 points and eight goals. He scored the game-winning goal to cap a seven-goal comeback in a 13-12 come-from-behind victory over Lafayette and was also credited with the game-winning tally in Army's win over Air Force during the season.
The 20 candidates on the preliminary list will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies the award. 2010 marks the fourth year for the men's lacrosse division of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
In 2008, Army defenseman Craig Massie advanced to the final ballot and was named a First-Team Lowe's All-Senior All-America. Last year, defenseman Scott Rosenshein was also selected one of 30 original candidates for the award.
