Black Knights Pick Up First Win of 2010

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army (1-0) swept all three double matches, and won all but one singles matchup, in its first dual-match of the season against visiting Fairfield at Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Friday night.

The freshman duo of Gary Kushnirovich and Rashad Shelton posted a 9-8 win at first doubles, while the senior tandem of Chris Albornoz and John Lucero won at second doubles, 8-4. Tripp Johnson and Alex Holland paired for an 8-2 decision at third doubles to complete the sweep.

After dropping the first set 3-6, Kushnirovich answered back 6-3, 6-2 to take his match at No. 1 singles. Donald Van Velzer went three sets to earn a point for the Black Knights at second singles, with Albornoz (6-3, 6-0) and Holland (6-1, 6-2) dispatching their opponents in straight sets at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. At No. 4, Tripp Johnson earned a7-6 third-set tiebreak win to help Army to its first win of the season.

The Stags picked up their only point of the match at third singles, as Robert Ferrante defeated Lucero 5-7, 6-4, 10-3.

The Black Knights will return to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow, when Army hosts Dartmouth for another dual-match at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
