WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lt. Col. Robert Kewley, a four-year letterwinner on the Army golf team and a member of the West Point Class of 1988, will serve as interim head golf coach during the spring semester.
Kewley, a two-time team captain, takes over the program from Maj. Chad Bagley who will be attending the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Intermediate Level Education Common Core Course. Bagley was named interim head golf coach when long-time head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger retired.
“We want to thank Lt. Col. Kewley for accepting our offer and helping the golf program,” Army Athletics Director Kevin Anderson said. “His successful experience as both a golfer and cadet, knowledge of the game, insight into West Point and relationships with the players through his work as an officer representative will ensure that we build upon the successes of the fall season and compete for another Patriot League Championship.”
Kewley graduated from West Point in 1988 after earning four golf letters and serving as team captain for his final two seasons. He was a part of three wins against Service Academy rival Navy and competed at the NCAA Regionals.
“I am honored by this opportunity to lead the Army golf team,” said Kewley. “I was very fortunate to play golf here and attend the world’s premier leadership institute. I am excited to pass on those lessons and work closely with our golf team, especially our senior class who has shown so much leadership and battled through adversity. Maj. Bagley did a tremendous job in the fall and I am going to work as hard as I can to get our team ready for the Patriot League Championships in the spring.”
Following his commission as a second lieutenant, Kewley served with the 1st Calvary Division in Desert Storm/Desert Shield after joining the Armor branch of the U.S. Army. He commanded a tank company in the 194th Separate Armored Brigade and then attended graduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Kewley taught in the Department of Systems Engineering at West Point and served as an officer representative for the golf team for seven years.
A native of El Paso, Texas, Kewley served a three-year tour at the Center For Army Analysis, including a deployment to Baghdad to serve on the Combined Joint Task Force 7 planning staff.
In 2005, Kewley returned to West Point and the Department of Systems Engineering and has spent the past three years as the director of the Operations Research Center. In his role, he utilizes the academic expertise of the faculty to perform systems analysis and research in support of Army, Department of Defense and other government organizations.
Kewley earned a bachelor’s degree in Math from West Point, a master’s in Industrial and Managerial Engineering from RPI in 1998 and a PhD in Decision Science and Engineering Systems from RPI in 2001. He and his wife, Heather, reside at West Point and have two daughters, Lauren (17) and Taylor (15).
The Army golf team will open the spring portion of its schedule March 15 at the Pauma Valley Invitational in Pauma Valley, Calif.
