WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army junior defenseman Scott Rosenshein was named the 2008 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Tuesday, as voted upon by the sports information directors of the conference.
A Chemical Engineering major, Rosenshein leads the 2008 Black Knights with a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average. A five-time Dean's List selection at West Point, the Montclair, N.J. native also garnered Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2007.
He recently became one of only 30 cadets, including the first-ever lacrosse player, to be accepted into West Point’s prestigious Scholarship Program, which prepares students who will be applying for the nation’s most esteemed post-graduate scholarships, including the National Science Foundation Scholarship and the Hertz Scholarship.
Rosenshein has appeared in all 14 games this season for the Black Knights which are currently ranked No. 17 in this week’s Nike/Inside Lacrosse national media poll, and No. 18 in the USILA Coaches Poll. A member of the Black Knight defensive corps that ranks fourth in the country in scoring defense (6.71 gpg), he is also one of the team's starting face-off wings on a unit that ranks 25th in face-off win percentage (.507).
Rosenshein becomes the third Black Knights to ever brandish the award and first since Mike Kamon capped his senior season with the honor in 2003. Dom Nogic was the first Army player to garner the award, sharing the title before graduation in 2003.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have achieved at least a sophomore standing and a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average while serving as a starter or key player in his/her sport.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
Army (9-5) finishes the 2008 regular season slate this Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. faceoff against Pennsylvania at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. A victory over the Quakers would build even more of a case for the Black Knights earning an at-large bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament, which is scheduled to start on May 11.
