WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army senior Jay Larson was named the Patriot League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman midfielder Rob McCallion garnered his second-consecutive Rookie of the Week honor, Monday, after leading the Black Knights to a pair of victories last week.
Army made up a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit on Tuesday to pick up an 8-7 victory at 12th-ranked Hofstra, before taking down Colgate, 13-9, to remain undefeated in the Patriot League, Saturday, at Michie Stadium.
Larson anchored the Army defense that held Hofstra to only two second-half goals and allowed the Black Knights to earn the comeback victory. He also caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls, while holding Raider attackmen Brandon Corp and Kevin Colleluori (who entered the game with a combined 53 points) to only four total points as Army won its fifth-straight game to improve to 7-2, including a 3-0 league mark.
McCallion scored the game-tying goal with 6:52 on the fourth-quarter clock and then assisted junior attackman Jason Peyer’s game-winning goal with two seconds remaining to cap the Army comeback at Hofstra. He then totaled three assists in the Black Knights' win over Colgate.
Army, which moved up to 11th in this week’s Nike/Inside Lacrosse national media poll and 14th in the USILA Coaches Poll, returns to action this Friday with a conference showdown at No. 15 Bucknell. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
