WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army has had a long tradition of dominating the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Week voting in the sport of baseball over the years. That trend continued on Tuesday when Black Knights’ left fielder Mike Greco nabbed the honor.
On the strength of a breakout performance on Sunday in which he went 4-for-6 with two home runs, one double, four runs scored and six runs batted in, Greco claimed his first weekly Patriot League award. It marked the 22nd time that a Black Knight freshman has earned the honor over the 18-year history of the conference, the highest total of any Patriot League member.
The Scottsdale, Ariz., native batted .308 (4-13) in three games last week, saving all of his offensive production for Sunday’s 23-0 blasting of Maryland-Baltimore County. Greco, who fell a triple shy of becoming first Army player to hit for cycle since 1994, collected 11 total bases in the contest. He established new single game freshman school records for home runs (tied), total bases, runs batted in and slugging percentage (1.833). He feel one home run, two total bases and two runs batted in shy of the single game school records in each respective category.
Greco has started all seven games for the Black Knights this spring and ranks tied for the team lead in runs batted in (7). He also lists third in total bases (13) and tied for fifth in base hits (6). Greco was selected in the 47th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but opted to attend West Point rather than sign a professional contract.
Army (2-5) has now garnered a league-leading 88 weekly awards since joining the Patriot League in 1993 (two years after the conference’s inception).
The Black Knights return to action this weekend, traveling to Lynchburg, Va., to square off against Liberty in a three-game series. The Flames have captured six of their first seven contests this season, posting wins over Notre Dame and Iowa, among others. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
