WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Army senior captain Ty Smith was second on still rings and the all-around along with a third on floor exercise in a collegiate gymnastics meet hosted by William & Mary Friday evening at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe (8-3), ranked No. 15 in the GymInfo poll, set a season-high in a 338.4-321.55 defeat of the No. 15 Black Knights.
Smith's career-high 13.95 on still rings earned him second place in that event. He posted a 14.05 in a third-place finish on floor exercise along with a fourth on vault (15.0) en route to registering a 79.05 in finishing runner-up in the all-around scoring.
Sophomore Chase Smith set a personal best 15.2 in a third-place finish on vault and turned in Army's highest score of 13.2 on parallel bars.
Senior Justin Sappington tied for third on high bar with a 13.55 along with recording the Black Knights' top score on pommel horse of 13.35 and the team's second highest mark of 13.6 on still rings.
Junior Nolan Melson scored his second highest score of the season on floor exercise with a 13.7.
The meet was the regular-season finale for the Black Knights (2-8), who will prepare for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships being hosted by William and Mary on April 2-3. Army had hosted that event that past two years at Gross Sports Center.
The Black Knights are the host school for this year's NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships being held at West Point's Christl Arena April 15-17.
