OMAHA, Neb. - Matt Kyler
dropped into the consolation bracket and Richard Starks was eliminated as Session
III of the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships wrapped up Friday
afternoon at a sold-out Qwest Center.
Kyler lost an 8-0 decision to
Big 12 champion Kyle Terry of Oklahoma while Starks dropped an 8-2 decision to
12th-ranked Brent Haynes of Missouri.
Kyler suffered his first loss
of the tournament in the quarterfinals to third-seeded and third-ranked Terry.
Once again Kyler was
aggressive early. He was in deep on a single-leg but failed to convert the
opportunity and Terry scored a takedown with 10 seconds left in the first
period.
Terry, who has now won 20
straight matches, increased his lead to 3-0 with a second period escape and
added a second takedown.
Kyler chose bottom in the final period but Terry secured two near fall points
and riding time for the victory to improve to 29-2 this season.
Kyler will return to the mat
Friday evening for Session IV. He will wrestle in the fifth round of
consolations against Wisconsin's Kyle Ruschell, the No. 4 seed. Ruschell beat Eric Albright of Pittsburgh 6-1.
Starks struck first in his
match against Haynes, seeded 12th and ranked 12th. Haynes scored a reversal to
knot the match at two after the first three minutes.
Haynes chose down in the
second period and scored an escape for a 3-2 lead.
Starks, trailing by a point,
chose neutral in the final period but Haynes collected another takedown, two
near fall points and a riding time advantage for the 8-2 win.
Starks, a three-time national
qualifier, ends his season with a 26-4 mark. He stands 105-25 in his career and
is now seventh all-time in career victories.
Session IV which will feature
the championship semifinals as well as the fifth round and quarterfinal
consolation bouts, is scheduled to be televised by ESPNU and espn360.com
beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern time.
