OMAHA, Neb. - Senior Matt
Kyler secured a third-period fall but Richard Starks dropped a decision as the
first session of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships concluded at Qwest
Center.
Kyler, seeded sixth at 149
pounds, will wrestle in the championship second round Thursday night. Starks,
unseeded at 197, will wrestle in the first round of consolations, in Session II
Thursday evening as well.
Kyler was the aggressor early
against George Mason junior Brian Bucher, getting an early takedown and
collecting riding time. Kyler chose the down position in the second period
after Bucher deferred and quickly got a reversal for a 4-0 advantage after five
minutes.
Bucher chose neutral in the
third period and Kyler collected his second takedown, then took him to his
back. Kyle utilized a cradle to secure the fall in 6:46.
Kyler advanced to Thursday's
second round which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. He will
wrestle 11th-seeded Desmond Green of Buffalo. Green, a redshirt sophomore with
a 28-6 record, defeated Shawn Harris of Virginia, 9-8, in his first round
match.
Starks fell behind to Purdue's
Logan Brown 2-0 when Brown picked up an early takedown. Starks chose down in
the second period and escaped with 30 seconds left in the second period to make
it 2-1.
Brown was in the down
position to begin the final period and escaped and got a takedown to extend his
lead to 5-1. Starks scored his second escape point to make it 5-2 but Brown
held the riding time advantage for a 6-2 win.
Starks falls into the
consolation bracket and will wrestle Tyler Smith of Rider. Smith beat Dylan
Temple of Appalachian State 10-3 in the pigtail match and was pinned by
second-seeded Craig Brester of Nebraska, in 2:59.
