KISSIMMEE, Fla.- Senior co-captain Jennae Tomlinson singled home a pair of runs and scored in a four-run seventh as Army rallied over the final three innings to defeat Rider 7-3 in the second game of the day at the Rebel Spring Games held at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.
The Black Knights moved to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in Florida following its second sweep of the season and first at the Rebel Spring Games.
Army trailed 1-0 following Jen Steward's RBI sacrifice bunt that delivered Megan Kozlowski, who led off with a single and advanced two bases on Ally Melia's single to right field, in the bottom of the third inning.
With a runner at third, winner Beverly Nordin (2-1) got out with an infield popup as she retired 11 straight batters before being touched for three straight hits and a pair of walks in the seventh in yielding a pair of runs. With two outs and bases loaded, the sophomore hurler got out of that jam with her career-high seventh strikeout.
The Black Knights headed into the bottom of the seventh with a 7-1 lead after rallying with a run in the fifth to tie the game 1-1, then snapping it with two in the second and putting the game away in a four-run seventh.
Army tied the game 1-1 on an unearned run with two outs in the fifth inning when the third baseman's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag on Tomlinson's grounder. The miscue allowed Alexis AuBuchon, who led off the inning with a walk, moved around on Angela Deger's single and Reanna Johnson's sacrifice bunt, to score.
AuBuchon's run-scoring single in the top of the sixth delivered Rachael Duval, who led off the frame with the first of three Army hits, for the tie-breaking run. Tiffany Held (3-for-4) scored the second run as she capitalized on a pair of wild pitchers in that inning off Kelsey Krisch. Held laced a one-out single to left field, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on AuBuchon's single and crossed when the pitch to Angela Deger bounced to the right of the catcher for a 3-1 lead.
Tomlinson had a hand in three of Army's four runs in the game-deciding seventh. The senior outfielder knocked in Clara Navarro and Johnson with a single up the middle and moved to second on the throw home. Tomlinson beat the throw to third on a fielder's choice and scored on classmate Erin McClain's groundout to the second baseman.
Held delivered Reynolds for Army's fourth run in that inning. The freshman outfield went 6-for-7 with five runs driven in and three scored in the two games played today as Army collected 20 hits (11 against St. Peter's and 9 vs. Rider). The Black Knights have outhit their opponents in Florida 29-23 and outscored them 21-16. Army's 3-1 start at the Rebel Spring Games is its best since 2003, and its 21 runs after four games is the most at the Rebel Spring Games.
Held took over as the Black Knights leader hitting .522 (12-for-23) with 11 RBI followed by Duval at .438 (14-for-32) with AubBuchon hitting .409 (9-for-22).
The Black Knights return to the diamond Thursday for games with Manhattan and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
