WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army's softball team captured two of the Patriot League's top weekly individual honors Monday with senior Jessi Muckelroy repeating as the conference pitcher of the week and sophomore third baseman Rachael Duval named player of the week. Both turned in strong performances in Army's sweep of Siena last week.
Muckelroy earned her second consecutive conference honor after throwing a complete-game shutout in Army's 6-0 first-game win over the Saints in its home debut last Thursday. The senior right-hander did not issue a walk in pitching her second straight shutout and career seventh.
The native of Houston, Texas, who spent the fall semester as an exchange student in Russia, worked her way out of jams three times with runners at third. Each time she escaped on groundouts to preserve her shutout.
The win is her second against one loss along with showing a 0.34 ERA in 20.2 innings in the circle, which ranks second and fifth, respectively, in the league. The two wins boosted Muckelroy's career total to 13 as the Army hurled collected her third career certificate.
Duval, earning her first-ever certificate, had a monster performance against Siena last week batting .571 with two home runs and four runs batted in and scored four times in Army's doubleheader sweep.
In a 6-0 win in the opener, Duval opened the scoring after drawing a walk in the first inning and being delivered by Alexis AuBuchon bases-loaded walk as Army drew four straight walks in that frame with two outs.
Duval boosted Army's 1-0 lead to 4-0 behind a three-run homer in the second inning. The Auburn, Ga., native, who had three straight hits in Army's 8-2 nightcap win, ripped a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the scoring as Army pulled ahead 5-3 in the series.
The Army sophomore lists third on the team batting .421 and is the team leader in home runs (2), runs scored (6), total bases (16) and slugging percentage and tied in hits (eight) and doubles (two). Duval is tied for second in the conference in home runs, lists fourth in total bases, fifth in slugging percentage, eighth in runs scored and ninth in hits and batting.
The Black Knights, who opened an eight-game slate Monday at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida, split first-day action beating Marist 6-1 and bowing to Tennessee-Martin 10-1 (5).
