WEST POINT, N.Y. - In a match that took less than three hours to complete, the Army women's tennis team continued to roll with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Niagara on Sunday morning at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights swept the doubles point and won five of six singles matches via straight-set victories to improve to 13-6 on the season.
Anne Houghton's performance highlighted a banner day for the Black Knights as Army lost just one set all day long. Army set the tone early losing just two games in three doubles matches. Houghton teamed with senior co-captain Kristin Beehler as the duo won their second match of the weekend at No. 1 (8-1). Junior Patricia Vollmer and freshman Larraine Saavedra improved to 3-1 in doubles this spring with an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Sewing up Army's doubles sweep, junior Maria Casaletto and freshman Kari Pope remained undefeated this spring (7-0) with an 8-0 blanking in third doubles.
In singles action, Houghton showed no quit in battling back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to dominate
Hansen 6-0 in the second set. With the match already decided in favor of
Army, Houghton won the tiebreaker (10-3) with ease.
Vollmer collected her fourth win in the last five matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Raquel Solis in the No. 2 singles slot. Meanwhile, junior Jurelle Mendoza continued to spectacular spring with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Niagara's Emma Cunnington at No. 3. Mendoza improved to 9-0 this spring and 16-5 overall. She has not lost a match since Oct. 11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Invitational.
Junior Audrey Hansen wrapped up Army's sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Brittany Walters in the longest match of the afternoon. Moving down the lineup, Casaletto and Saavedra remained perfect on the day with singles wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Casaletto extended her win streak to five matches, while Saavedra blanked Niagara's Lindsay Richards (6-0, 6-0) to improve to 4-1 this spring.
Army will take the next week off for spring break before returning to action on Wednesday, March 24, for its Patriot League opener at Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. Army was picked to defend its Patriot League title for a sixth-straight year, according to the preseason poll. The Black Knights have not dropped a Patriot League regular-season match since 2002, winning 37-straight heading into the March 24 visit to Lehigh.
