FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Sara Lehman finished fifth in the individual smallbore finals and Army took sixth in the team scoring with a 2291 in closing out the first day of the NCAA Rifle Championships being hosted by Texas Christian University.
Lehman's 582 in the team relay scoring was the fourth best mark and just a point off the top score of 583 fired by freshman Sarah Scherer of TCU, Bryant Wilier of West Virginia and Patrick Sartz of Alaska Fairbanks who ranked first, second and third, respectively, based on inner shots.
One of eight shooters to qualify for the individual finals, Lehman posted a 99.5 in the shoot-off for a 681.5 fifth place composite. Scherer outpointed the field with a 102 in the finals to claim the smallbore title with a 685.0. Swartz was second with a 682.7 followed by Navy's Chris Burleson (682.5) with TCU's Erin Lorenzen's 681.6 edging Lehman's 681.5 for fourth place.
Joining Lehman on Army's four-man relay unit were team captain Charles Ridge and freshman Ian Young firing 572s with Kelly Buck adding a 565. Ridge finished 26th and Young placed 27th among the field of 39 shooters.
Alaska Fairbanks captured the team title with a 2320, outpointing runner-up TCU (2314) with defending champion West Virginia finishing third (2308) followed by Kentucky (2296), Nebraska (2295) and Army (2291). Rounding out the rest of the field were Navy (2288) and Murray State (2272). West Virginia, Kentucky, Nebraska and Army are all members of the Great America Rifle Conference.
The Black Knights will be challenged to retain their position when they return to the range Saturday for the air rifle relays beginning 10 a.m. at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Army was fifth in smallbore at last year's championships and seventh in rifle in finishing sixth.
NOTES: Sarah Scherer, who captured TCU's first-ever individual national title in smallbore, is the sister of Stephen Scherer, a former member of Army's rifle team ... it is the seventh straight year that Army has qualified for the NCAAs under head coach Ron Wigger.
