WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior right-hander Jessi Muckelroy turned in a strong showing in Army's first weekend of softball competition at the Colonial Classic. She went 1-1 with an impressive 0.51 earned run average to earn Patriot League "Pitcher of the Week" honors in the first release of the season. It is the second time Muckelroy has copped this honor after earning her first certificate last year.
The native of Houston, Texas, allowed just one run in 13.2 innings going the distance against George Washington in both games. Muckelroy scattered five hits, struck out six batters (one shy of her career high) and did not issue a walk in Army's 5-0 blanking of George Washington in closing out tournament play Sunday afternoon. The Colonials were never able to advance past second base in the three times a runner reached scoring position.
Muckelroy scattered six hits in the first-game, a 1-0 heartbreaker loss to George Washington after giving up a walk-off home run to pinch hitter Autumn Taylor with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Muckelroy had retired six straight batters prior to that game-winning hit and had only twice allowed the Colonials into scoring position over the first six frames. She got out of a jam with a strikeout in the top of the second inning with runners at third and second base, then left a runner stranded at second base in the third.
The George Washington victory snapped a four-game series losing streak and was Army's first over the Colonials since winning the inaugural game of the series 9-1 in 2005. It was also the first win of the season for the Black Knights and rookie head coach Michelle DePolo.
Army is back in action Thursday afternoon hosting Siena in its home debut at the Army Softball Complex. The first pitch in the non-league doubleheader is at 3 p.m.
