CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Army junior F Erin Anthony finished regular season play exactly how she started it - with an Anaconda/Patriot League Player of the Week citation under her belt. After averaging a double-double last week, the team captain garnered her fifth Player of the Week nod of the season, including the first and now last nomination periods of 2009-10.
Anthony averaged 13.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game, while recording her 12th and 13th double-doubles of the season against Lafayette (Feb. 24) and Bucknell (Feb. 28) last week, respectively. Anthony's 15-point, 15-rebound performance at Lafayette led the Black Knights in both categories. She shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field and added two blocks in the overtime loss.
With Patriot League seeding on the line during Sunday's match-up at Bucknell, Anthony came up with 12 points and led all players with 13 rebounds and three blocks. She tallied her 700th career rebound in the first half and finished the game just two points shy of joining Army's 1,000 career point club. Anthony, along with a 16-point performance from junior G Jessie Coiffard, helped to secure a 49-37 victory over the Bison which in turn clinched the No. 4 seed for Army heading into this weekend's 2010 Patriot League Tournament. With a loss on Sunday, Army would have finished eighth. With the fourth seed, Army draws host and fifth seed Holy Cross in Saturday's opening round. The Black Knights and Crusaders meet in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row and will do battle at Holy Cross' Hart Center at noon.
A nine-time Patriot League Player of the Week during a decorated four-year career, Anthony is the only player in the league to be averaging a double-double (16.2 ppg, 10.4 rpg) this season. Her 51.2 field goal percentage and 1.9 blocks per game land second in the Patriot League. Anthony played all 45 minutes of action during Army's 1-1 week. She leads the Patriot League averaging 37.5 minutes a game.
Anthony enters postseason play sitting on 998 points, 710 rebounds and 133 blocks in her three-year career. Should she get her 1,000th point during the tournament, Anthony would become the sixth player in program history to hit the milestone as a junior. She ranks second all-time at Army in career blocks, seventh in rebounds and 15th in scoring.
An all-league player a year ago and preseason pick in 2010, Anthony's credentials off the court are equally as impressive as the gaudy statistics she puts up each night. A civil engineering major, Anthony became the first Army women's basketball player in history to receive CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. The 2010 All-Patriot League honorees and major award winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 2, via conference call.
Out of the 16 weeks of balloting this season, the Patriot League Player of the Week has come from West Point seven times - more than any other program in the conference. Anthony, American's Michelle Kirk and Navy's Angela Myers are the only players to earn the award multiple times. Coiffard and junior G Nalini Hawkins were each named Player of the Week once. Anthony's five citations tied Kirk for the most by any player in the conference this season.
