WEST PLINT, N.Y. - The Army women's tennis team captured the doubles point, but Binghamton went on to win five of the six singles matches in straight sets to turn back the Black Knights, 5-2, at Litchenberg Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
Army's No. 1 doubles tandem of Annie Houghton and Kristen Beehler posted their first win of the spring campaign, which got underway last weekend, following a hard fought 8-6 win over the Binghamton duo of Jillian Santos and Lauren Bates. The Black Knights (0-2) posted an 8-5 decision behind the No. 3 duo of Erin Colton and Annie Hang to secure the point in doubles with the Bearcats winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Beehler was the lone Black Knight to win in singles play where she was forced to three sets at No. 3 before pulling out a 6-4 victory in the deciding third set over Yulia Smirnova. The Army senior was a 6-4 winner in the first set, but lost 6-2 in the second to force the extra set.
Binghamton was hard pressed in four of its five straight set wins in singles with Houghton throwing a scare at Bates before going down to a 7-5, 6-4 defeat at the No. 1 spot. Freshman Annie Colton's rally fell short at No. 2 singles where she suffered a tough 7-5 loss in the second set trying to rebound from a 6- opening-set defeat.
In the lower half of the lineup, junior Michael Tollerton pressed Ann Edelman in the first set before bowing 7-6 (7) , then challenged in second before going down to a 6-4 defeat at No. 4, while Jessica Ahn was outlasted 7-5 in her opening set to Marina Bykovskaya in the first set in falling at the No. 5 spot.
Army will look to rebound against Sacred Heart later today.
