WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sunday's highly anticipated Patriot League Volleyball Tournament title
match will feature top-seeded Army against eight-time defending champion
American at West Point's Gillis Field House. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
No. 1 Army defeated No. 4
Lehigh (3-0) in Saturday's first semifinal match, while No. 2 American swept
No. 3 Colgate in the second semifinal.
Army moves on to the
Championship for the first time since 2005 and will play for its first League
title since 1994, while the Eagles has won every title since entering the
Patriot League in 2001. The teams split the season series, with each winning on
its home court. Army defeated American 3-2 on Oct. 16, while the Eagles
prevailed by a 3-1 score on Nov. 7 in Washington, D.C.
The Black Knights have played
in eight championship matches and won titles in three of those outings (1991,
1992, 1994). Army's last three championship appearances came against American
(2001, 2004, 2005) with the final battle resulting in a thrilling 3-2 victory
for the Eagles.
Admission for the Patriot
League Championship is free. Army will continue its free raffle during Sunday's
championship match. Open to cadets and general public (including ODIA
employees), fans can visit the Army Marketing table to fill out a free raffle
ticket for a chance to win either a 32" flatscreen HDTV, 8GB iPod
nano or a 5-megapixel digital camcorder. The winners will be drawn during the
break (between sets two and three) in Sunday's championship match. Winners must be present to win.
